U.S. and China Aim for Better Communication
The United States and China are working on creating direct lines of communication between their militaries. This is to help avoid misunderstandings and calm things down if problems come up, according to Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.
After talking with China’s Minister of National Defense, Admiral Dong Jun, Hegseth said on social media that he had a “positive meeting.” This follows President Trump’s discussion with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The leaders agreed that peace and good relations are the best way forward for both countries.
Hegseth also mentioned that he and Admiral Dong agreed to set up these military communication channels to handle any issues that might arise. More meetings are planned to discuss this further.
Hegseth also spoke about the importance of standing up to China’s claims in the South China Sea, where they have disputes with other countries. He emphasized that the U.S. wants peace but needs to make sure China doesn’t try to control other nations.
He also spoke in Malaysia with defense leaders from Southeast Asian Nations, and pushed them to stand up against China’s actions in the South China Sea. Hegseth also said that Beijing’s designation of the Scarborough Shoal – a territory seized from the Philippines in 2012 – as a “nature reserve” “yet another attempt to coerce new and expanded territorial and maritime claims at your expense.”
