Jeffrey R. Holland, a Respected Leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Passes Away at 85
Salt Lake City – Jeffrey R. Holland, a prominent figure in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has died at the age of 85. His passing marks the loss of a man known for his dedication to faith, family, and traditional values.
Holland passed away early Saturday morning due to complications from kidney disease, the church announced.
As a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, a key governing body within the Church, Holland played a role in shaping church policy and overseeing its operations.
Holland’s career included a period as the President of Brigham Young University (BYU), from 1980 to 1989. While there, he fostered dialogues with other faiths, and BYU established a campus in Jerusalem.
Dallin H. Oaks, the current President of the Church, spoke fondly of his long friendship and service with Holland, highlighting his efforts to support the faithful and share his beliefs.
Holland was known for his powerful speeches. One notable address in 2021 focused on defending the Church’s traditional teachings, particularly regarding marriage.
Holland was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Terry Holland. He leaves behind their three children, 13 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren.
