North Carolina Lawmaker Resigns Amid Serious Allegations
High Point, N.C. – Cecil Brockman, a Democratic state representative from North Carolina, has stepped down from his position after facing serious criminal charges. The charges involve alleged sexual misconduct with a minor.
Brockman’s resignation follows growing calls from both Republicans and Democrats for him to leave office. He was also facing a possible investigation by a House committee.
In a statement, Brockman said he needs to focus on defending himself against the accusations. He acknowledged that he could not properly serve his constituents while dealing with these legal challenges.
North Carolina House Speaker Destin Hall stated that Brockman’s decision was the correct one, both for the people he represented and for the House as a whole. Hall expressed that this action prevents a drawn-out removal process and brings a conclusion to a concerning situation.
Brockman is accused of multiple felonies, including statutory rape and indecent liberties with a child. These charges relate to alleged incidents involving a 15-year-old.
Reports indicate that Brockman is also accused of trying to contact the alleged victim while the victim was in the hospital. He also allegedly attempted to use his position to obtain information about the victim’s location.
Brockman has served in the state House since 2015, representing parts of High Point and Guilford County. He has been involved in committees related to education and funding.
Leaders from both parties, including Democratic Governor Josh Stein, had urged Brockman to resign after his arrest.
Brockman remains in jail with a bond set at over $1 million.
