A potential tragedy was avoided at Atlanta’s busy airport after a family member reported a man’s alleged plan to cause harm.
Police were alerted by the Cartersville Police Department about a possible threat at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The Cartersville police received information from the family of Billy Joe Cagle, 49, who said he was making threats on social media and heading to the airport.
According to officials, Cagle’s family told police he was traveling to the Atlanta area with the intention of hurting people. Atlanta’s mayor described Cagle as someone with “mental challenges” and a previous criminal record. Records show Cagle had a past conviction for marijuana possession.
Cagle arrived at the airport’s south terminal in his truck. Security footage showed him closely observing the crowded TSA check-in area.
Officers approached Cagle, confirmed his identity, and took him into custody. Inside his vehicle, they found an AR-15 rifle with ammunition. A dog found in the truck was safely returned to his family.
Cagle is now facing charges including making terroristic threats, possessing a firearm during a felony, and attempting aggravated assault.
Authorities are still investigating his motive, with the FBI assisting in the case.
Officials emphasized that this situation was resolved successfully because a family member recognized the danger and reported it.
Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is known as the world’s busiest airport.
The incident occurred on the same day the airport warned travelers of potential delays at security checkpoints due to staffing shortages.
