The House Judiciary Committee, led by Republican Jim Jordan, has issued a subpoena for former Special Counsel Jack Smith to appear for a private interview this month. This comes despite Smith’s previous offer to testify in a public hearing regarding his investigations into President Donald Trump.
Jordan stated that Smith’s testimony is crucial for the committee’s oversight responsibilities. The committee is requesting both Smith’s testimony and related documents.
Smith’s lawyer expressed disappointment that the offer for a public hearing was rejected, preventing the American people from hearing directly from Smith. However, Smith will attend the closed-door deposition to address concerns and clarify any misconceptions about his investigations.
Smith was appointed to oversee investigations into President Trump’s efforts surrounding the 2020 election and the handling of classified documents.
Republicans in Congress have been scrutinizing Smith’s team, especially after revelations emerged that phone records of Republican lawmakers were analyzed as part of the investigation into the events of January 6, 2021.
Smith’s legal team defended the analysis of phone records, stating it was lawful and consistent with Justice Department policy. They insist that Smith’s decisions were based on facts and the law, without political bias. They also noted that the content of the phone calls was not accessed, only the call logs.
