President Trump Commutes Sentence of Former Congressman George Santos
Former President Donald Trump has decided to shorten the prison sentence of George Santos, a Republican who used to represent New York in Congress. Santos was serving time for misusing money during his campaign.
Trump announced his decision on Truth Social, saying that while Santos may have been a bit of a “rogue,” many others are not facing such harsh punishment. He also pointed out that Santos always voted Republican, showing his loyalty to the party.
Trump mentioned a Democrat senator, Richard Blumenthal, suggesting that Blumenthal’s actions were worse than Santos’s. He also said that Santos was being mistreated in prison.
Santos had been sentenced after admitting to wire fraud and identity theft. He was ordered to pay back a lot of money he had taken and give up even more that he got through fraud.
Prosecutors said Santos had used stolen credit card information, even from elderly people, to pay for campaign and personal expenses, like designer clothes.
Santos won his seat in 2022, even though people later found out he had made up parts of his life story.
The House of Representatives voted to kick Santos out in December 2023, after a report showed he had done some wrong things.
In a message posted online before going to prison, Santos said he might be leaving for now, but that he would be back.
President Trump wished Santos good luck and a good life after commuting his sentence.
