NBA Figures Implicated in High-Stakes Poker Ring with Alleged Mafia Ties
A recent investigation has uncovered a sophisticated poker cheating operation, allegedly backed by organized crime, that ensnared prominent figures from the National Basketball Association. The indictments reveal a scheme that used both advanced technology and old-fashioned tactics to defraud unsuspecting players in underground games.
The poker games, reportedly run by mafia families, attracted wealthy individuals with the promise of high-stakes competition and the allure of playing alongside sports celebrities. Among those implicated are Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, and former NBA assistant coach and player Damon Jones. These “face cards,” as they were reportedly known, helped draw in the “fish” – wealthy targets who could be exploited.
The cheating tactics were elaborate. A rigged shuffling machine could determine the exact order of the cards, transmitting the information wirelessly to a “quarterback” at the table. This player would then use subtle signals to alert fellow cheaters, ensuring they bet accordingly. Other methods included X-ray tables to see face-down cards, hidden cameras, and special contact lenses to read marked cards.
Victims were often pressured to pay their debts through wire transfers to shell companies. In some instances, physical violence was allegedly used to extract payment. The investigation highlights the dangers of unregulated gambling and the potential for criminal elements to exploit these activities. The involvement of high-profile sports figures raises serious questions about integrity and the influence of organized crime on professional sports.
Billups appeared in court, but his lawyer declined to comment. Jones has not been available for comment. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding the law and preventing corruption in all aspects of society.
