Maryland Grapples with Illegal Car Stunts, Sparking Political Debate
New video footage from the Prince George’s County Police Department shows what they are calling “illegal car takeovers.” These events involve people gathering to watch cars perform dangerous stunts, like spinning at high speeds, often in shopping center parking lots.
These incidents have become part of an ongoing discussion about crime and safety in Maryland.
Governor Wes Moore has suggested working together with President Trump on a “safety walk” in Baltimore, with the goal of showing the good work being done to lower crime rates.
President Trump has been critical of Moore, stating that he believes the governor isn’t doing enough to keep people safe. He mentioned on social media the possibility of sending in federal help.
Recently, an 18-year-old, Naef Salmo, was arrested and charged after a woman was seriously hurt during one of these car takeovers. Police say Salmo was doing car stunts when he hit a woman and then drove away.
Police found that Salmo allegedly tried to hide his involvement by repainting the car. They also found a handgun in the vehicle.
Salmo is now facing several charges, including assault and reckless endangerment. The police are still looking into the incident and may file more charges.
Prince George’s County Police Chief George Nader stressed the dangers of these illegal car events. He noted that while some may see them as harmless, they can lead to serious injuries, and there have been fatal incidents in the past.
