New York Attorney General Faces Scrutiny Amidst Rally Appearance
New York Attorney General Letitia James appeared at a rally Monday night with New York City mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani, promising to keep fighting against President Trump’s policies. This public appearance comes after James was recently indicted on federal fraud charges.
The rally, named “Our Time Has Come,” took place in Washington Heights. Mamdani, along with Representatives Nydia Velázquez and Adriana Espaillat, and City Councilmember Chi Ossé, showed their support for James.
Mamdani thanked James for her years of service, stating she has “fought the good fight for New Yorkers.”
Last week, U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan announced that a federal grand jury indicted James on charges of bank fraud and making false statements to financial institutions.
James defended herself, saying she knows what it’s like to be attacked for doing her job. She promised to stand firm and not give in.
Mamdani has accused President Trump of using the indictment against James as political payback.
James has called the indictment a “weaponization” of the justice system by the president. She stated she will continue to fight for justice and New Yorkers, resisting what she views as overreach from Washington, D.C.
As attorney general, James previously filed a civil fraud lawsuit against President Trump and his organization, alleging they inflated asset values.
James has expressed her support for Mamdani for mayor, saying he shares her commitment to improving New York City.
President Trump has criticized Mamdani, labeling him a “communist.” He has also suggested that New York City could lose federal funding if Mamdani is elected and does not “behave.”
New Yorkers will choose a new mayor on Nov. 4, as Mayor Eric Adams has suspended his re-election bid. Mamdani is currently considered a leading candidate, along with former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent, and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.
