Increased Attacks on ICE Officers Linked to Political Rhetoric
The acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Todd Lyons, has pointed to escalating political rhetoric as a factor contributing to a surge in violence against immigration officers. In a recent interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Lyons stated that negative comments from elected officials are intensifying attacks on those enforcing immigration laws.
According to Lyons, there has been an astonishing 830% rise in assaults against ICE officers compared to the previous year. He emphasized that as ICE officers become more visible in communities, particularly due to the current administration’s focus on stricter immigration enforcement, they face greater scrutiny and backlash.
Lyons also clarified that ICE is not just targeting undocumented immigrants with criminal records; many individuals without prior offenses have been arrested during operations aimed at apprehending violent offenders. However, he reassured that ICE primarily focuses on “the worst of the worst.”
Officers within ICE have expressed their concerns about the growing violence and the public perception of their work. Officer Kristian Moreno shared his sentiments about being vilified despite just doing their job. He noted that he had to discuss potential backlash with his family before speaking out, emphasizing the need to share their stories with the American public.
Another officer, Edgardo Centeno, highlighted the emotional toll that this division in the country takes on those in law enforcement. He mentioned the commitment officers make to defend the Constitution and the sadness they feel witnessing the current state of division.
These comments from ICE leadership and officers underline the challenges they face while carrying out their duties amid a politically charged environment.
