A judge has decided that ICE, or Immigration and Customs Enforcement, went too far when they arrested some people who were in the country illegally. This happened at the start of President Trump’s second time in office.
The judge in Chicago said that ICE broke an agreement that limits when they can arrest people without a reason. Because of this, the judge is making the agreement last longer, until 2026.
The judge also said that ICE has to tell the public every month how many people they arrest without a good reason.
Some groups in Illinois who help immigrants sued ICE, saying that the arrests made in January were against the rules. They said ICE can’t just arrest people without a warrant or a good cause.
Someone from the ACLU of Illinois said that ICE needs to follow the law, just like everyone else. They think ICE should not be allowed to stop, bother, and arrest people without a real reason.
President Trump sent Texas National Guard troops to Illinois for 60 days to help deal with crime and deport people who are here illegally.
The leaders of Chicago, Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, are trying to stop ICE from doing their job. They even filed a lawsuit to stop President Trump from sending the National Guard to Illinois.
The leaders in Chicago don’t agree with President Trump about how to handle immigration. They don’t want the National Guard in their state, and they don’t want ICE to arrest people who are here illegally.
