A Tragic Reminder: Illegal Immigrant Charged in New York Taxi Driver’s Death
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has reported the arrest of Santos Paulino Vasquez-Ramirez, a Guatemalan national, who is accused of the murder and robbery of a taxi driver in Brewster, New York.
According to the DHS, Vasquez-Ramirez was in the country illegally, having entered in 2013. Despite a deportation order issued in 2016, he remained in the United States.
The victim, Aurelio Zhunio-Orbez, was found dead on December 7th.
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated that this tragedy highlights the potential dangers of open border policies. She emphasized that Vasquez-Ramirez should not have been in the country in the first place, and that ICE has taken action to ensure he will not be allowed back into American communities.
The DHS also noted that under President Trump’s leadership, immigration enforcement has prioritized the removal of criminal elements. The agency’s year-end report indicates that millions of illegal immigrants have left the U.S., leading to a more secure border.
