Georgia Father Convicted of Starving Daughter to Death
A father from Atlanta, Rodney McWeay, has been found guilty of the tragic murder of his 4-year-old daughter, Treasure, by starvation. The conviction occurred on June 19, and McWeay now faces serious legal consequences following a series of disturbing crimes.
McWeay, age 32, was convicted not only of malice and felony murder but also faced multiple counts of cruelty to children, false imprisonment, and kidnapping. In total, he was found guilty of 14 felonies related to his actions against his children and the circumstances surrounding Treasure’s death.
The Harsh Living Conditions
McWeay’s children had been previously removed from his custody due to poor living conditions described as unsanitary and moldy. Allegations surfaced that he had taken his children from their mother’s care and held them in what prosecutors called a "house of horrors." The children were kept in locked rooms, deprived of food, water, and access to a bathroom, all while being monitored by cameras.
Neighbors reported hearing continual cries and screams coming from McWeay’s apartment. Despite these concerns, attempts by the Georgia Division of Family & Children Services and local law enforcement to intervene did not result in timely help for the children.
Discovery of Treasure’s Condition
Days before Christmas, police found Treasure unresponsive in McWeay’s home. She, along with her brothers, was rushed to the hospital but was later pronounced dead. An autopsy revealed that the cause of death was cardiac arrest, resulting from long-term malnutrition. At the time of her passing, Treasure weighed only 24 pounds.
During the trial, McWeay’s defense claimed he acknowledged making poor decisions regarding the children’s care but insisted he never intended to harm them.
Upcoming Sentencing
McWeay’s sentencing is scheduled for 30 days from now. He turned down a plea deal of 75 years, putting him at risk of receiving multiple life sentences instead.
This case has raised significant concerns about child welfare and highlights ongoing issues regarding parental custody and the protection of vulnerable children.
