A judge in Virginia, appointed by President Biden, is now overseeing the case against former FBI Director James Comey. Comey was recently indicted on charges, including allegedly obstructing a congressional investigation.
Former President Trump has publicly criticized Comey and the judge.
However, those who have worked with Judge Michael Nachmanoff say he is a fair man. They say he will likely not let politics influence his decisions in the courtroom.
Nina Ginsberg, a defense attorney who has worked with Nachmanoff, said that his personal beliefs won’t affect how he judges the case.
Nachmanoff was a public defender for many years. In that role, he fought for fair treatment for everyone. More recently, he has handled other cases involving political figures.
Timothy Belevetz, another lawyer, said Nachmanoff is smart and well-respected. He believes Nachmanoff will listen to all sides fairly.
Comey has said he is innocent and trusts the court system.
The conflict between Trump and Comey goes back years. Trump fired Comey in 2017, and has called for Comey to be prosecuted.
Lisa Wayne, from the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, said Nachmanoff’s involvement should reassure people. She believes he will protect the Constitution and ensure a fair process.
