In a recent podcast appearance, Harris was asked about Biden’s mental state leading up to the debate. She recounted a phone call from Biden during his debate preparation, saying she sensed something was “a little off.” According to Harris, “I don’t think he wanted to debate is my point. He didn’t want that debate.”
The interviewer pointed out that many observers felt Biden seemed “not OK” during the debate and questioned why Democratic leaders didn’t address it. Harris responded by saying that wanting to compete is crucial for success. She added, “If you don’t want to be in the competition, it will absolutely have an impact on your performance. And I don’t think he, I’m pretty sure he did not want to debate.”
Harris went on to suggest that Biden was “talked into it.” She acknowledged that debates are never perfect and always require some cleanup afterward. However, she implied that the June 2024 debate was particularly challenging.
Biden’s performance in that debate sparked widespread concern, even among mainstream media outlets and Democratic figures. Many started to acknowledge what many Americans had already observed: a noticeable decline in the President’s mental acuity.
During the interview, Harris also discussed a past criticism she made about leaders within the Biden White House. In her memoir, she claimed they were “adding fuel to negative narratives” about her. She suggested that Biden’s inner circle seemed content to let these narratives spread without defending her.
When asked if Biden was aware of this, Harris said she didn’t know but believed his staff was responsible. She further suggested that the White House might have wanted her “to be weaker in public perceptions” to keep her in her place.
Harris stated, “I think that was part of it. I do, I think that they decided that, you know, there are far too many people in this world and in professional life who approach things with a zero-sum game.”
Despite these criticisms, Harris maintained that she has “a great deal of affection” for Biden. However, she also admitted to times when he “greatly disappointed” and even “angered” her.
These comments from Harris offer a glimpse into the pressures and complexities of modern politics. They highlight the challenges faced by leaders and the importance of strong leadership and clear vision. As citizens, it is important for us to carefully consider the character and capabilities of those seeking to represent us, to ensure that our nation is guided by individuals who are truly ready to lead.
