Zak Starkey Remains with The Who After Clarification
In a recent update, Pete Townshend, co-founder of the legendary rock band The Who, confirmed that drummer Zak Starkey will continue his journey with the band. Townshend shared this news following Starkey’s earlier statement expressing plans to part ways after nearly three decades of collaboration.
Starkey, son of The Beatles’ famed drummer Ringo Starr, had caused a stir when he mentioned taking a break from the band shortly after their performances at London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall. However, Townshend quickly addressed the situation, stating that Starkey was not being asked to leave.
“We’ve had some communication issues that need resolving,” Townshend acknowledged in a statement on April 19. He reassured fans that the matters at hand have been addressed, allowing the band to move forward positively. The guitarist and vocalist mentioned that both he and lead singer Roger Daltrey requested Starkey to adjust his drumming style to better align with their current lineup, which he readily accepted.
Acknowledging the confusion, Townshend took some responsibility for the misunderstanding that arose during the recent shows, particularly regarding concerns about sound issues on stage. He noted, “Seems like we could have dedicated more time to sound checks. It’s always tricky in the center of the stage.”
Despite the bumps in the road, Townshend emphasized that The Who is like a family, and the issues that blew up will now be laid to rest. “We move forward with optimism,” he declared.
Earlier this week, Starkey had announced his intention to take time off for personal reasons, wishing the band well after so many years. A representative for The Who had indicated that anyone’s departure from the group would ideally have been a collective choice, highlighting their respect for Starkey and his contributions.
Starkey has played a vital role in The Who since their 1996 tour, and earlier this year, he faced health challenges with a blood clot in his leg. Fortunately, he reported being fully recovered and ready to continue his drumming journey with the band.
The Who and their fans await what the future holds for this legendary band, as they return to the stage with renewed spirit and unity.
