Woman Who Faked Cancer for Years Gets Prison Time
Amanda Riley, a woman from California, led more than 300 people to believe she was battling cancer for seven years, while she was actually healthy. Through her deceitful actions, she managed to collect over $100,000 in donations, which she used for personal expenses, luxury trips, gifts, and other non-medical expenses.
Amanda created a false narrative about her supposed struggle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma and shared her journey through a blog and social media, claiming to experience various stages of the illness. While spinning this elaborate tale, she also welcomed two sons into her family, referring to them as "miracle babies."
Her story gained even more attention through a podcast titled "Scamanda," which examines her fraudulent activities. This narrative has also led to a TV series adaptation set to premiere on ABC.
In recent years, questions arose regarding how Amanda carried out her deception and eventually faced justice. She generated a loyal online following by sharing her purported health struggles and requesting donations for her medical expenses. However, it was soon revealed that she was never diagnosed with any form of cancer.
Amanda’s fabricated health issues garnered her support, including a spotlight in her church community and assistance from various friends and acquaintances. Despite claiming to be undergoing treatment, she continued to lead a normal life, including having children.
At her sentencing in May 2022, Amanda expressed deep remorse, stating that she felt terrible for the pain she caused others. The judge, however, remained firm, highlighting the seriousness of her actions and the impact on her family and community. Ultimately, she received a five-year prison sentence along with three years of supervised probation and was ordered to pay restitution to the individuals she deceived.
As of now, Amanda is serving her sentence in a federal medical facility. Efforts have been made by her legal team to reduce her sentence, but these requests have been denied by the court. Her case remains a shocking example of betrayal and deception, leaving members of her community and supporters grappling with the aftermath of her lies.
