ST. LOUIS — Tim Ream stands out as one of the most composed figures on the U.S. men’s national soccer team. With over 15 years of professional experience, his calm demeanor remains unshaken even amid the chaos typical of CONCACAF matches.
After a thrilling Gold Cup quarterfinal win against Costa Rica, Ream shared his thoughts. "Listen, I don’t rush into chaos," he said, reflecting on the game from just two days prior. However, when he witnessed Costa Rican players taunting teammate Malik Tillman after the young U.S. star missed a penalty, Ream felt compelled to act. "Nah," he thought. "You’re not gonna pick on the quietest guy," and he quickly moved in to defend Tillman.
One of the highlights of that night for Ream was seeing nine other teammates come to his side. Even goalkeeper Matt Freese sprinted onto the scene. "He ran 100 meters to join the fray," coach Mauricio Pochettino commented. This display of team spirit is exactly what Pochettino hoped for since taking on his coaching role last September. "I’m Argentinian," he said, "and we love to fight.”
In contrast, earlier criticisms surrounded the team after lackluster performances against Panama and Canada in March, where many believed the players weren’t putting in enough effort. Until recently, they faced scrutiny for their mentality after such disappointing matches. The decision by star player Christian Pulisic to skip the Gold Cup only added fuel to the fire. Pochettino hinted at his agreement with those concerns through his comments.
To reset the team’s dynamics, Pochettino made bold choices for the Gold Cup roster, opting for a mix of lesser-known MLS players instead of established stars. The players reported to Chicago in early June, not just to train, but to bond and cultivate teamwork, enhancing their readiness to face challenges together.
On day 29 of their time together, their team ethic was evident. Ream described the post-penalty fracas as a joyful moment. “Finally, we’re a group; we’re going to push back. You’re not going to push us around,” he stated.
Pochettino recognized the growth in camaraderie among his players, particularly highlighting Tyler Adams, who is known for his competitive spirit. “What we are seeing is not just one player; it’s the whole group,” Pochettino remarked, indicating the significant progress the team has made.
When Pochettino took charge, he faced the challenge of connecting a group that had previously grown too comfortable. The team needed a culture shift. Early training camps, often short and sporadic, had made meaningful bonding difficult. The extended Gold Cup period provided the ideal opportunity for Pochettino and the squad to connect on a deeper emotional level.
Though the mix of veterans and new players raised questions about their chemistry, the recent match seemed to signal that they were beginning to find their footing.
Ream articulated this renewed togetherness, describing how they supported each other throughout a game filled with ups and downs. “It was evidence of how together we felt, how crucial it was to have each other’s backs,” he noted.
As the Gold Cup progressed, reflecting on the previous friendly losses against Türkiye and Switzerland, Ream acknowledged that team spirit had been crucial to their success thus far. “Instead of three tables during meals, it’s now just one,” said Pochettino, conveying the growing unity within the squad.
Pochettino emphasized that fostering such chemistry cannot be forced; it emerges organically among players. “We can create a platform, but the players have done the rest,” he said, expressing pride in their development as a cohesive unit.
Looking ahead to their semifinal matchup against Guatemala, the positive energy within the team is palpable. Ream couldn’t help but express his pride in his teammates. "I watch these guys, not just on the field but at meals and in the locker room, forming strong bonds so quickly. It’s something we perhaps haven’t had enough of in the past," he said, pleased to see the players enjoying themselves and supporting one another.
With an invigorated team spirit and a promising bond developing among players, there is a sense of optimism surrounding the U.S. men’s national team as they continue their journey through the Gold Cup.
