China’s Bullying Tactics in South China Sea Fail to Intimidate
In a recent forum in Manila, the commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, Admiral Stephen Koehler, assured that China has not been able to bully its way into taking control of the South China Sea. Despite aggressive actions, including ramming and using water cannons, China has not succeeded in intimidating neighboring countries that have rightful claims to the area.
Admiral Koehler emphasized the United States’ commitment to ensuring freedom of navigation and upholding international law in the Indo-Pacific region. He stated that the Pacific Fleet’s mission is to deter aggression and to be prepared for combat if necessary. “China’s actions have been steadily more aggressive, but Southeast Asian nations are standing firm in defense of their rights,” he noted.
Countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam continue to expand their oil and gas operations despite pressure from Beijing. The Philippines has also taken a strong stance against Chinese activities, publicly reporting dangerous maneuvers by Chinese forces.
Koehler praised the resolve of these nations to protect their maritime rights, recognizing a growing emphasis on stronger maritime capabilities across Southeast Asia. He reaffirmed the U.S. Pacific Fleet’s readiness to support allies in this effort, emphasizing that no nation should be pushed around.
The forum also marked the ninth anniversary of an international arbitration ruling that invalidated China’s extensive claims over the South China Sea. This ruling came after the Philippines sought international arbitration following a standoff over a disputed area that China effectively seized. The Philippines’ actions were met with China’s refusal to engage in the arbitration process and its continued defiance of the ruling.
U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines MaryKay Carlson highlighted this ruling as a significant victory for the Philippines and a guiding principle for smaller nations facing powerful adversaries. However, she pointed out that China has continued to ignore the ruling and engage in illegal activities to back its claims.
In light of China’s ongoing threats, the Philippines is working to strengthen its defense capabilities. Foreign Secretary Theresa Lazaro mentioned that while tensions exist, the country still seeks dialogue with China to prevent further conflict. Upcoming discussions between Chinese and Philippine officials are planned to address the escalating disputes in the South China Sea.
As tensions remain high, it’s clear that the U.S. stands firmly with its allies in the region, committed to defending their rights and promoting stability.
