Two teenagers in Oregon have been charged with murder and robbery after they allegedly shot a man who tried to intervene in a grocery store theft.
The incident took place at a Fred Meyer grocery store in Portland’s Hazelwood neighborhood around 3:50 p.m. on January 13. Police received calls reporting a robbery and gunfire at the scene.
When officers arrived, they found 47-year-old Jonathan Trent on the ground with a gunshot wound. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but sadly did not survive. The medical examiner later confirmed that his death was a homicide caused by the gunshot.
Authorities believe that Trent was shot while attempting to stop the robbery. On January 23, police announced the arrest of three teenagers in connection with the case. Among them were a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old, both facing charges of murder and robbery. A third 15-year-old was arrested separately for a previous robbery.
In addition, police suspect the 16-year-old was linked to several other robberies in the area in early January. Sergeant Matt Jacobsen noted that investigators connected several crimes that occurred in the days following the shooting.
He expressed concern over young individuals resorting to such violent crime, stating that it is rare to see youths involved in such serious offenses, especially with firearms readily available in the community.
The identities of the three boys have not been disclosed as they remain in custody at the Donald E Long Juvenile Detention Center. The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office is currently evaluating whether to try the two older teens as adults.
