DORAL, Fla. — President Donald Trump addressed House Republicans on Monday, reflecting on his initial week in office and pushing for support on his immigration and border security initiatives. “We have no apologies and we’re moving very fast,” Trump stated confidently.
During his speech at the House Republicans’ annual policy retreat, Trump emphasized his commitment to border issues, suggesting they take precedence over other pressing matters, such as inflation—an issue he previously highlighted during his campaign last year.
“We’re forging a new political majority that’s breaking apart the old coalitions that have dominated American politics for too long,” he declared, marking a key focus for his administration.
Held at Trump National Doral, a lavish golf resort owned by the president, the retreat comes at a crucial time for Republicans, who feel buoyed by recent electoral victories that have secured their control of Washington. However, they are now faced with the challenge of negotiating a spending bill that must be passed before March 14, when current government funding runs out.
The upcoming budget blueprint aims to outline a comprehensive plan for various Republican priorities, including tax cuts, development of fossil fuel resources, and stronger border security measures. With slim majorities in both the House and Senate, unity among Republican lawmakers will be essential to move these plans forward without Democratic support.
Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana set a deadline for the House Budget Committee to advance the blueprint in the first week of February. “That will be where we can deliver on the campaign promises we’ve made,” Johnson remarked.
With Trump’s presidency now in its second term, he acknowledged the unique political capital that comes at this stage, jokingly pondering if he could run for office again.
Despite sticking together as a party, there are discussions among Republican senators on whether to package their initiatives into one large bill or to separate them into two, focusing first on border security and then on tax matters.
In addition, aligning with their goals, Republicans are looking at reforms to key social safety nets like Medicaid, particularly regarding work requirements. Trump has also championed ideas aimed at easing tax burdens, such as exempting certain income sources from taxation.

Republicans have countered this narrative by warning that failing to extend tax relief measures could leave families facing larger tax bills due to reduced credits and deductions.
