Two young children tragically lost their lives due to freezing temperatures in Detroit, while three others were hospitalized. The victims, a 2-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy, were among five children living in a van. Their mother had parked at the Hollywood Casino’s garage on February 10, around 1 a.m., but later ran out of gas, which left them stranded in the cold.
According to reports, the mother discovered that her 9-year-old son was unresponsive around noon. After seeking assistance from a family member to take the child to the hospital, she realized that her 2-year-old daughter was also not breathing. Both children were pronounced dead at Children’s Hospital, with early indications suggesting they succumbed to the cold.
The other three children, ages 13, 8, and 4, were treated at the hospital and are in stable condition. The weather at the time was harsh, with temperatures around 12 degrees and wind chills dropping to 6 degrees.
Authorities announced that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the children’s deaths is underway, and it’s possible that charges could be filed against the mother. She was detained for questioning, though she is currently not in custody.
Detroit police Captain Nathan Duda emphasized the importance of investigating the situation thoroughly, stating that it is crucial to examine the circumstances to prevent future tragedies. The family had previously lived on the east side of Detroit but had apparently been living in the van for several months.
As a response to the rising number of individuals at risk of homelessness, officials are urging those in need to seek help from local shelters or churches. Captain Duda stressed the importance of community awareness, encouraging anyone who sees someone sleeping outside in the cold to contact authorities for assistance. “We care,” he said, highlighting the commitment to provide necessary resources for those in distress.
