NEW YORK — Seuk Kim, a passionate animal lover and dedicated volunteer pilot, tragically lost his life in a plane crash while on a mission to rescue dogs. Last weekend, Kim took off from Maryland, transporting three small dogs to safety, marking yet another of his selfless flights for animals in need.
After fulfilling his childhood dream of becoming a pilot, Kim flew countless missions, bringing pets from overcrowded shelters and disaster-stricken areas to rescue organizations. His commitment to animal welfare was noteworthy and served as an inspiration to many.
Unfortunately, on Sunday, his plane met a heartbreaking fate. The 49-year-old pilot’s aircraft crashed in the snowy hills of the Catskill Mountains, leading to his death and the loss of one of the dogs he was carrying. Thankfully, the other two dogs survived and are currently under care.
“He was one of a kind,” said Sydney Galley, a fellow volunteer who often flew alongside Kim. “He had a big heart and just wanted to help animals. Recognition was never his goal.”
One of the surviving pups, a 4-month-old Labrador mix named Whiskey, suffered injuries but was recovering well at a local veterinary hospital. Videos of Whiskey showed the pup getting much-loved attention from staff and playfully engaging with them. The other surviving dog, Pluto, an 18-month-old Yorkshire terrier mix, also had minor injuries and was relocated to a nearby animal shelter.
The circumstances surrounding the crash are under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration. According to local authorities, visibility was poor at the time of the accident, and Kim had sought to adjust his altitude just before the plane went down.
Despite being equipped with emergency technology, rescuers faced challenges in locating the downed aircraft, which was buried under a foot of snow about two miles from the nearest road.
Kim, originally from South Korea, had built a loving life in the U.S. with his wife and three children in Springfield, Virginia. His cousin shared that Kim came to this country with dreams and a relentless work ethic that allowed him to create a life full of purpose and generosity.
In his free time, Kim enjoyed cooking and was a baseball enthusiast. With his newfound piloting skills, he was excited about a recent job offer with a charter flight company. Galley highlighted how he was truly “on top of the world” prior to the incident.
For four years, Kim had flown numerous animal rescue missions, often undertaking up to three flights a week. He welcomed every request with a smile and was unbothered by the size or condition of the animals he transported.
His recent efforts included transporting animals affected by Hurricane Helene, where he not only helped deliver supplies but also made considerable contributions to the rescue community in North Carolina.
Kim’s commitment to animal rescue left an indelible mark on many lives, as he helped save countless pets from shelters and misfortune, including dogs that were on the brink of euthanasia. His legacy of compassion and service will surely be remembered by all those who shared in his mission.
On that fateful Sunday, Kim took off after transporting several dogs from Georgia. He was excitedly discussing his new job with his family and joyfully carrying on with his missions. His spirit of placing others above himself was evident to those who knew him.
The animal rescue community is mourning the loss of a true hero, remembering not only his dedication to saving lives but also his kind-hearted nature that touched many lives.
