The family of a woman who tragically lost both of her hands in a shark attack is sharing their story about what started as a relaxing vacation but quickly turned into a terrifying ordeal.
The incident occurred on February 7 at around 10:30 a.m. local time near Blue Hills in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands. The 55-year-old tourist, whose name has not been released, was seriously injured and transported to Cheshire Hall Medical Centre for immediate care before being flown off the island for further treatment.
To support the family during this challenging time, the woman’s brother-in-law established a GoFundMe page, stating that the accident “has completely altered their life in the blink of an eye.”
According to the GoFundMe description shared by family members, the vacation took a horrifying turn when the woman was in hip-deep water and was approached by a seven-foot bull shark. Initially, the shark bumped into her legs and then bit her thigh. When she attempted to protect herself by putting her hands in front of her, the shark bit off both of her hands, one at the mid-forearm and the other at the wrist. Her husband rushed to help her, fighting off the shark until she was able to make it safely to the beach, where she collapsed.
The family reported that she had been flown back to Canada by air ambulance for additional surgery and recovery, emphasizing that they will require extensive support to navigate through this tough period.
Following the attack, local authorities closed the beach for safety reasons but reopened it a couple of days later after confirming that the shark had moved to deeper waters. Officials have urged the public to be mindful of their surroundings when swimming and to respect marine life.
As of February 18, the GoFundMe page had raised nearly $16,000 to assist the family during this critical time, highlighting the community’s support for their recovery process.
