A tragic stabbing incident in Austria has left one young boy dead and five others injured. The attack occurred in the city of Villach on February 15, where a 23-year-old man was taken into custody following the violent event.
According to reports, the suspect, a Syrian national living in Austria, allegedly used a folding knife to injure three teenage boys and three adult men aged 28, 32, and 36 near the main square of the city around 4 p.m. local time. He has since been charged with murder and attempted murder.
A 42-year-old man working for a food delivery service witnessed the attack from his vehicle and intervened, leading to the suspect’s arrest, as shared by a police spokesman.
Austria’s President Alexander Van der Bellen expressed his sorrow about the incident on social media, describing it as horrific and extending his condolences to the victim’s family and those injured.
Reports indicate that two of the victims sustained serious injuries, while others are hospitalized with minor wounds. Austria’s Interior Minister Gerhard Karner revealed that the suspect may have links to the Islamic State group, suggesting he had radicalized himself quickly through online resources.
Authorities searched the suspect’s home and found an Islamic State flag among his belongings. It was noted that the suspect had a valid residence permit and no previous criminal record.
Austria has a significant Syrian refugee population, roughly estimated at 100,000. The suspect was in the country legally and was in the process of seeking asylum.
In a somber gesture, people gathered at the crime scene on February 16, lighting candles in remembrance of the young victim.
