A teenager from Wisconsin has been arrested and charged with arson after allegedly setting fire to a local congressman’s office. Authorities say the 19-year-old cited the recent discussions about a TikTok ban as his reason for the act.
On Sunday morning, the Fond du Lac Police Department received reports of a fire at a strip mall on N. Peters Avenue. This strip mall housed the district office of U.S. Representative Glenn Grothman, a Republican. When emergency crews arrived, they used fire extinguishers to control the flames until firefighters could completely extinguish the fire.
The police soon found the teenage suspect nearby. During questioning, he confessed to starting the fire in response to the talks about banning TikTok. He was arrested and is currently being held at the Fond du Lac County Jail. The case will be forwarded to the Fond du Lac County District Attorney’s Office.
Fortunately, the office was empty at the time of the fire, so no injuries were reported. Both the police and the City of Fond du Lac Fire Rescue are currently investigating the incident.
FDLPD Chief Aaron Goldstein expressed relief that no one was hurt, emphasizing that violent actions will not be tolerated in the community. He praised his officers for their quick response, which helped contain the fire and apprehend the suspect.
Following the incident, Congressman Grothman posted on social media, confirming that no one was harmed and expressing gratitude towards the firefighters and police for their rapid response.
The discussions around TikTok have intensified recently. The Supreme Court ruled earlier in January that a law requiring TikTok to sell its operations in the U.S. or face a ban is constitutional. The legislation mandating this action had previously been passed by Congress and signed into law.
Although TikTok initially shut down for U.S. users after the ruling, the platform quickly returned to service less than 24 hours later, stating that it was in the process of restoring access. Additionally, former President Trump expressed his intentions on social media to intervene and delay the federal ban on TikTok.
As the situation develops, the community remains focused on safety and recovering from the incident.
