President Trump to Host Syrian Leader for Talks at White House
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – President Donald Trump is set to welcome Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa to the White House for discussions. This marks the first time a Syrian president has visited the White House.
An administration official said that the meeting is scheduled for Nov. 10.
President Trump previously met with al-Sharaa in Saudi Arabia in May. That was the first meeting between leaders of the two countries in a long time. Syria has been working to re-establish its place in the world after many years of being isolated.
The meeting in May was a step forward for Syria after a long period of rule by the Assad family.
Al-Sharaa, who once went by the name Abu Mohammed al-Golani, had been associated with al-Qaida.
During his visit, al-Sharaa is expected to sign an agreement to join the U.S.-led group working to defeat ISIS.
This visit follows President Trump’s efforts to encourage peace in the Middle East.
