Sterling K. Brown, a prominent actor and executive producer of the new Hulu series “Paradise,” is making waves in the television landscape by enlisting talented actors he respects. In a recent interview, Brown expressed his enthusiasm about casting people he admires, highlighting his admiration for Julianne Nicholson, whom he met at the Emmys. “I was so excited to be in the same room with her, and now I get to work with her,” he said.
Best known for his role as Randall in the acclaimed series “This Is Us,” which concluded in 2022, Brown has also earned an Oscar nomination for his performance in “American Fiction.” In “Paradise,” he takes on the role of a Secret Service agent protecting the president, played by James Marsden. The show opens with a shocking murder, pulling viewers into a complex mystery.
Brown praised Marsden’s comedic talents, stating, “When James became available, I was thrilled. He has a side that many people haven’t seen.” Marsden, too, has high regard for Brown, calling him one of the good guys in Hollywood. “He’s humble and really cares about those around him,” Marsden remarked.
The show tackles significant issues such as privilege and societal hierarchy during emergencies, which Brown noted feels quite relevant today. He stated that while this project was conceived a decade ago by creator Dan Fogelman, it resonates with current events. “There’s a strong connection between capitalism and politics today that our show directly addresses,” he said.
Disney, the parent company of Hulu, has supported the series by launching its premiere on both Hulu and Disney+. The subsequent episodes will follow a weekly release schedule.
In a recent Q&A, Brown also mentioned his colleagues from “This Is Us,” noting their well-being despite challenges from recent events in Los Angeles. He expressed a blend of gratitude and heartbreak for those impacted.
When asked about his decision to join “Paradise,” Brown explained it was a chance to work with Fogelman again, and he appreciated the opportunity to portray a character distinct from his previous roles. He seemed genuinely excited about stepping up as the lead for the first time at his age and remarked on the unique blend of excitement and superstition that came with it.
Beyond acting, Brown has ventured into podcasting with two projects, one with his wife and another focused on “This Is Us.” He shared that this was a way for them to bring their engaging dynamic to a wider audience.
Despite his current success, Brown admitted to missing the audition process, as it provided a sense of validation. He reflected on his past auditions, recalling the thrill of earning a role among famous peers.
