A British stepfather has been sentenced to at least 25 years for the murder of his 22-month-old stepson. Christopher Stockton, 38, was given his sentence on February 7, following the boy’s death in January 2024. Authorities noted that Stockton had initially suggested the toddler might have choked on a cookie.
When emergency services arrived, they found no signs of choking but discovered the child had sustained a serious head injury. The boy, named Charlie Roberts, was taken to the hospital where it was confirmed he had suffered major bleeding in his brain.
Charlie was left in Stockton’s care the day before his death. Reports indicated that Stockton contacted emergency services, claiming Charlie was having trouble breathing shortly after suggesting he choked. However, medical professionals did not find any blockages.
Further investigation revealed that Charlie had been experiencing multiple unexplained bruises while under Stockton’s care. His mother, Paula Roberts, 41, pleaded guilty to child neglect, acknowledging her failure in protecting her son.
The court heard that there had been several incidents of violence in the home since Stockton and Paula began their relationship in early 2023. A judge stated that Paula had turned a blind eye to the abuse happening to her son, despite having previously worried about his well-being.
In June, detectives found revealing evidence on Paula’s phone, including photos of Charlie with injuries. There were indications that she had intended to seek help but never followed through.
At the sentencing, prosecutor Dominic Tate emphasized that Stockton had subjected Charlie to severe violence, which directly led to his tragic death. He expressed condolences to Charlie’s father, acknowledging the immense pain the family continues to feel from this loss.
The father of the boy, Barry Greenwell, shared his heartache, describing Charlie as a cherished son and grandson, whose loss had created an unfillable void in their lives. Local authorities stated that Charlie had a bright future ahead before his life was abruptly taken away.
