On Valentine’s Day, Loveland Ski Area in Colorado hosted its 34th annual Mountaintop Matrimony, celebrating love in an unforgettable winter setting. This unique event welcomed a record 130 couples, who gathered on a snowy beginner slope at nearly 12,000 feet above sea level.
Surrounded by picturesque snow-laden trees and breathtaking mountain views, couples shared their vows while enjoying the company of their fellow winter sports enthusiasts. Participants ranged from those in traditional wedding attire to others in vibrant costumes, making the occasion both festive and memorable.
Sage McCririck, the marketing and events manager at Loveland, highlighted the magic of the day, explaining how it blends the exhilaration of skiing with the joy of celebrating love. Many couples expressed how meaningful it was to tie the knot or renew their vows in such a cherished location.
For Sander and Kelley Wyjad, the day was especially significant as they celebrated 20 years of marriage at the very spot they first exchanged vows. Kelley wore her original wedding dress, handmade with embroidered snowflakes, evoking fond memories of their special day.
The tradition began in 1991 when Loveland Ski Area, established in 1937, decided to host a fun event during the often slow winter months. What started with just a handful of couples has now blossomed into a beloved gathering, with many couples returning to renew their vows each year.
Despite challenges posed by the pandemic, including social distancing measures, the spirit of love persevered. Couples stood in heart-shaped areas painted in the snow, proving that even in difficult times, the bond of love remains strong.
This year, festivities included celebratory drinks and delicious desserts at the main cabin, with custom wedding-themed party favors for attendees. The event not only showcases the beauty of the Colorado Rockies but also the enduring spirit of love during the winter season.
