Scottish Bull Becomes Local Sensation in Connecticut
KENT, Conn. — A Scottish Highland bull has captured the hearts of residents in the rural hills of western Connecticut. This charming animal has been wandering the area for over a month after escaping from its owner’s property.
Lee Sohl, the town’s animal control officer, mentioned that there have been sporadic sightings reported by locals, including a few just last week. The bull was recently spotted near the border with New Milford.
“People keep seeing it, but they aren’t aware that we’re looking for it,” Sohl said in a phone interview. “When someone calls me about a sighting, I inform the owner, and they quickly respond to try and catch it. But it’s challenging in this weather, and the bull is understandably frightened.”
Jo Ann Joray, the bull’s owner, noted that while there have been many individuals helping to search for the bull, capturing it has proven difficult.
Social media has been buzzing with photos of the wandering bull, generating a lively discussion among users. Some express concern for its well-being, while others find it adorable, with a few humorously suggesting it would make for good steaks.
Sohl noted that stray farm animals are not uncommon in the area, where it is typical for cows, horses, and goats to occasionally escape their enclosures.
“That’s just part of life where we live,” Sohl added.
The story of this bull brings to mind a similar case from a few years ago involving Buddy the beefalo, a bison hybrid that roamed the central Connecticut woods for several months after making a break for freedom. Buddy’s adventure ended when he was captured and taken to a sanctuary in Florida.
According to the Highland Cattle Society in Scotland, Scottish Highland cattle are durable animals, well-suited to living outdoors, which is fortunate for the bull during this frigid winter, as temperatures have remained below freezing.
