WELLINGTON, New Zealand — A rare sight has brought together scientists and cultural experts in New Zealand as they study the spade-toothed whale, one of the world’s most elusive marine mammals. With only seven of these whales ever spotted, much about the species remains a mystery.
Anton van Helden, a senior marine science adviser with New Zealand’s conservation agency, shared his excitement about the discovery. “It’s extraordinary,” he said, reflecting on his 35 years of studying beaked whales. This recent event marked the first dissection of a spade-toothed whale, which had washed up on a beach in July.
Despite their rare presence, no spade-toothed whale has ever been observed alive in its natural habitat. The scientific community has many unanswered questions about these creatures, including their habitat, diet, and even their physiological characteristics. One critical mystery includes how the whales process their food, which varies among different beaked whale species.
As researchers prepare to study the 5-meter-long male whale in Dunedin, they are hopeful that they can shed light on these unanswered questions. “It’s possible we might find new parasites that have never been documented before,” van Helden said. The last known specimens were not assessed before being buried, so this presents a unique opportunity.
New Zealand has a history as a hotspot for whale strandings, with thousands recorded since records began in 1840. The region has yielded discoveries dating back to the 19th century, but this is the first time a spade-toothed whale will be dissected for scientific study.
The dissection process is being conducted with great respect for the whale, particularly in collaboration with Māori, New Zealand’s Indigenous people. For the Māori, whales hold cultural significance as a taonga, or treasure, deserving of honor. Members of the local iwi, or tribe, are present during the procedure, sharing traditional customs and knowledge, including a prayer over the whale.
Tumai Cassidy of Te Rūnanga Ōtākou expressed the importance of this collaboration, indicating that the whale is regarded as a gift from Tangaroa, the ocean deity. Following the study, the iwi will retain the whale’s jawbone and teeth, while the rest of the skeleton will be exhibited in a museum, allowing for educational opportunities through modern technology like 3D printing.
The spade-toothed whale is thought to inhabit the expansive Southern Pacific Ocean, known for its deep trenches. These whales, as part of the beaked whale family, are recognized as proficient divers, often remaining hidden from view, which adds layers to their mystery.
As scientists from various backgrounds gather, there’s a shared commitment to understanding not only how these whales die but also how they thrive in the ocean. Joy Reidenberg, a researcher from Mount Sinai in New York, highlighted this approach by stating their aim is to discover insights that can benefit human health and well-being.
This fascinating research endeavor exemplifies a blend of science and cultural reverence while further unraveling the secrets of one of nature’s rarest creatures.
