Scientists have recently discovered intriguing cosmic waves that resonate like birds chirping, coming from an unexpected location in space. Known as chorus waves, these bursts of plasma occur at frequencies that humans can hear. When transformed into audio, they sound similar to high-pitched bird calls.
While researchers have previously detected these sounds in space, the new findings are particularly remarkable as they originate from over 62,000 miles (100,000 kilometers) away from Earth—an area where measurements of such waves had never been taken before. This groundbreaking discovery has sparked significant interest among scientists, including space physicist Allison Jaynes from the University of Iowa, who remarked that it opens up many new questions regarding the physics in that region.
The concepts behind these cosmic chirps remain a mystery, but there are indications that Earth’s magnetic field may play a role in their creation. Chorus waves have been picked up on radio antennas for decades, with earlier detections made at research stations in Antarctica during the 1960s and by NASA’s Van Allen Probes, which studied radiation belts surrounding Earth.
The latest observations were made using NASA’s Magnetospheric Multiscale satellites, which were launched in 2015 to investigate the magnetic fields influencing Earth and the Sun. The findings were recently detailed in a study published in the journal Nature.
Chorus waves have also been detected around other planets, including Jupiter and Saturn, and they can generate high-energy electrons, which have the potential to disrupt satellite communications. According to study author Chengming Liu from Beihang University, these waves are among the strongest and most significant detected in space.
This latest detection of chorus waves raises fresh questions, especially given that they were found in a region where Earth’s magnetic field is stretched—an outcome that scientists did not anticipate. As Jaynes noted, the discovery is captivating and compelling, highlighting the need for further exploration of these cosmic events.
