A man from New York has been arrested and charged with murder after the remains of his 65-year-old roommate were found in a suitcase in the East River.
The discovery was made on February 5 when the NYPD Harbor Unit pulled a suitcase from the river near Governor’s Island and found a human torso inside. The remains were later identified as belonging to Edwin Echevarria, 65.
Following this grim discovery, detectives questioned Echevarria’s roommate, Christian Millet, 23. He was arrested on February 12 and charged with second-degree murder.
According to police reports, Millet confessed to killing Echevarria by pushing him to the ground and stomping on his head. He also allegedly admitted to dismembering Echevarria’s body and placing the remains in the suitcase. So far, only the torso has been recovered; no other parts of the body have been found.
The suitcase was first noticed by the captain of a NY Waterway ferry, who then alerted the police. When officers opened the suitcase, they found the torso wrapped in a sleeping bag.
The police are still looking into the case, and no motive has been made public at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
