Ricki Lake has expressed her heartfelt gratitude for the tremendous support she has received after losing her home in the recent fires in Los Angeles. One of her most cherished losses has been the photo albums documenting the home birth of her son, Owen, in 2001. While she has the film from that special day, the personal touch of the photo album was deeply meaningful to her.
In a touching post on Instagram, Lake shared that her doula from that time, Jennifer Lickson, reached out to offer copies of the original photos after the devastating fire. Lake described this gesture as one of the kindest things anyone has ever done for her, emphasizing how much it means to have those memories restored.
“It’s the little things that are the biggest things of all,” Lake remarked, highlighting the importance of these sentimental items. She went on to thank her doula once again for the thoughtful offer, describing the pictures as “priceless.”
Reflecting on her experiences since the fire, Lake expressed how overwhelming it has been and remarked on her gratitude for the support from her community. “This has brought me to my knees. I can’t imagine how much harder it must be for others who have suffered more,” she said. She acknowledged the kindness of friends and companies who have lent a helping hand during this challenging time.
Lake, who has always prided herself on her independence, shared that being in a position of need is an unusual and difficult experience for her. “I’ve built my life through hard work, and to see it all vanish in an instant is surreal,” she mentioned, echoing her deep sense of loss for not just material items but irreplaceable memories, such as the original signed script from “Hairspray” and family photographs from her parents and grandparents.
Despite taking precautions for fire safety, Lake feels that the area was not adequately prepared for such disasters. She urged people to keep those affected by the fires in their thoughts, emphasizing the importance of community during difficult times. “I am fortunate to have insurance, but that doesn’t replace what I’ve lost. We will create a new space that is just as magical,” she added, sharing her determination to rebuild.
Lake and her husband, Ross Burningham, are already starting the process of rebuilding their home. She fondly remembered how their Malibu home served as a gathering place for friends and family, filled with countless joyful moments. “It’s a daunting task, but I am committed to making it happen again,” she concluded.
