Pope Francis has recently accepted the resignation of a prominent Peruvian bishop, Archbishop Miguel Cabrejos, who has faced criticism for his handling of abuse allegations linked to a conservative Catholic organization. This group, known as Sodalitium Christianae Vitae (SCV), was disbanded by the Vatican earlier this year after serious accusations were leveled against it.
Archbishop Cabrejos, aged 76, previously led the Peruvian Bishops Conference and had held this role for twelve years. His resignation follows the norms of the Catholic Church, which encourages bishops to prepare for retirement by age 75. He will be succeeded by Jesuit Bishop Gilberto Vizcarra.
Throughout Cabrejos’ tenure, allegations emerged against the SCV, including accusations of sexual abuse, intimidation of journalists, and exploitation of local farmers in northern Peru. Many victims have expressed concerns that Cabrejos did not take adequate action to address these issues. Journalist Pedro Salinas, a former SCV member, has been vocal about the archbishop’s lack of response, stating he was indifferent to the suffering of victims.
The SCV was established in the early 1970s as a conservative counter-movement to the left-leaning liberation theology that gained popularity in Latin America during the 1960s. At its peak, the organization had a significant influence in Peru and extended its reach to the United States as well.
In a recent interview, Cabrejos claimed that he had alerted the Vatican to the abuses within SCV as far back as 2015. However, an independent report revealed severe misconduct, including psychological and sexual abuses by SCV’s founder, Luis Figari. Following investigations by trusted advisors of Pope Francis, numerous members of SCV were expelled from the organization.
As the situation evolves, it highlights the complexities within the Catholic Church, especially as it navigates issues of governance and accountability. The focus now shifts to how the new leadership will respond to these critical challenges moving forward.
