The tragic story of a devoted animal rescue pilot, Seuk Kim, came to light recently after he lost his life in a plane crash while attempting to save dogs in need. The incident, which took place in the snowy Catskill Mountains of New York, has touched the hearts of many in the community.
Seuk Kim, a 49-year-old father of two and a volunteer with the organization Pilots n Paws, set off on November 24 from Maryland, aiming to transport a brown and white puppy named Lisa, along with two other small dogs, to a new home. Unfortunately, the single-engine plane he was flying crashed under unclear circumstances, ending his life and that of little Lisa.
In a heartfelt tribute, Kim’s 16-year-old daughter, Leah, shared that her family decided to have Lisa’s ashes returned to them as a way of honoring her father’s mission. They felt it was important to keep Lisa close, reflecting Seuk Kim’s dedication to her. “He cared enough about her to risk his life,” Leah explained. “We want to take care of her because that’s what Dad would have wanted.”
On Sunday, a fellow pilot and friend of Seuk Kim made the journey to retrieve Lisa’s ashes in Albany, New York, so they could be returned to the Kim family in Virginia. Leah mentioned that they plan to bury Lisa’s ashes in their backyard alongside another beloved family pet, providing a sense of comfort to the grieving family.
Seuk Kim, originally from South Korea, had a lifelong dream of flying. He started rescuing animals four years ago and became an essential part of the local animal rescue community by making regular trips for various organizations. His passion for helping animals was evident, and he often shared stories of the dogs and cats he saved.
Penny Edwards, a transport coordinator for Forever Changed Animal Rescue, described Kim as an “incredible person” who significantly impacted the lives of many animals and their future homes. She noted that his efforts extended beyond just animal rescue; he was actively involved in the community, providing assistance to hurricane victims as well.
As the family prepares for Seuk Kim’s funeral this Thursday, his legacy of compassion and dedication to animals lives on in the hearts of those he touched and the lives he changed through his selfless work.
