A Chicago doctor is facing legal issues after her dog was found in a dire condition. Anita Damodaran, 38, had her request for detention denied, as she is accused of animal cruelty. Her dog, a Portuguese water dog named Betty, was discovered malnourished and struggling to breathe in a plastic storage bin back in March 2024.
According to reports, Betty was found by a cleaner in a bathtub while Damodaran was facing eviction from her apartment. The heartbreaking moment happened when rescuers noticed a paw reaching out from the bin. One rescuer described the scene, saying it took them a moment to realize they were seeing a nearly lifeless dog.
In December, authorities confirmed that Damodaran had been arrested in Florida on animal cruelty charges, following a warrant issued by the Chicago Police. She was set to be extradited back to Illinois.
Damodaran’s case is drawing widespread attention, with many animal advocates advocating for justice for Betty. The dog was severely neglected, suffering from sores and matted fur, but has since made a remarkable recovery and is now in a loving home.
John Garrido of the Stray Rescue Foundation, who helped in Betty’s rescue, shared that she is now thriving after her horrendous experience. Many advocates for animal rights attended Damodaran’s court appearance, voicing their concerns about the cruelty Betty endured.
This case has sparked outrage among the community, with advocates expressing their determination to ensure that such acts of cruelty do not go unpunished.
