Bueckers Shines in WNBA Debut, Leads Wings to First Victory
UNCASVILLE, Conn. — Paige Bueckers, the top pick in the WNBA draft, finally secured her first professional win, leading the Dallas Wings to a decisive victory over the Connecticut Sun. After starting her career with four consecutive losses, this win was a welcomed relief for the former UConn star.
Bueckers scored a remarkable 21 points in the Wings’ 109-87 triumph on Tuesday night. “It felt great to play like that as a team in a special environment,” she reflected after the game. “We really put together a full 40 minutes, and I was just happy to be out there.”
This week was particularly significant for Bueckers as she returned to Connecticut, the state where she once helped lead UConn to its 12th national championship just a couple of months ago. Her previous outing was in Minnesota, her hometown.
With Tuesday’s win, Bueckers extended her unbeaten streak at Mohegan Sun Arena, where she claimed victory in all 15 of her previous games, including four Big East championships with the Huskies.
“I don’t think I ever lost here. I wanted to bring that energy into tonight,” Bueckers stated confidently.
The atmosphere was electric as Bueckers was introduced, receiving a warm ovation from the sellout crowd. Many fans wore her jersey, and local basketball teams cheered enthusiastically as she took the court.
She quickly made an impact, scoring seven points and dishing out four assists in the first quarter alone. By halftime, she had tallied 15 points, helping the Wings establish a solid 14-point lead.
Wings coach Chris Koclanes praised Bueckers for her exceptional talent and character. “She continues to impress us with her skills and, even more so, the kind of person she is,” he said.
The day before the game, Bueckers shared an inspiring video on social media showcasing her work in combating food insecurity in Minnesota, a cause she began championing in 2022. As Chegg’s first student-athlete brand ambassador, she is dedicated to raising awareness about hunger among students—an issue that has become even more pressing due to the pandemic.
Reflecting on the surprise reunion with beneficiaries of her project, Bueckers expressed her gratitude. “It was a total surprise to see those people who have been part of my journey,” she said. “Giving back and witnessing the impact is truly inspiring.”
Koclanes noted Bueckers’ remarkable mental approach both on and off the court. “She is committed to evolving as a leader and really invests in her teammates,” he mentioned. “Her basketball IQ is high, and she quickly grasps concepts and adapts to the game’s physicality.”
The Dallas Wings will face Connecticut again on June 20 for a second matchup this season, and fans will eagerly anticipate seeing how Bueckers continues to grow in her inaugural WNBA season.
