DURHAM, N.C. — The Durham Police Department is currently investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place early Sunday morning.
Around 12:08 a.m., an officer arrived at a shopping center on Hope Valley Road after receiving a 911 call about illegal street racing. Upon arrival, the officer tried to break up the gathering when some individuals began throwing objects at the patrol car. The officer exited the vehicle to confront one of the suspects, which led to a foot chase.
During the pursuit, the suspect pulled out a handgun. The officer repeatedly instructed the suspect to drop the weapon, but the suspect refused. Eventually, the suspect raised the gun, prompting the officer to fire at him, according to law enforcement reports.
After fleeing on foot, the suspect managed to get into a different car to escape the area. Quickly responding officers were able to pull over that vehicle and provided medical assistance to the suspect, who was then taken to the hospital and is currently in stable condition.
The police have not yet disclosed the identities of the suspect or the officer involved in the incident. According to the police chief, none of the officers were hurt during the event. Further details are expected to be shared on Monday morning. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is handling the investigation, which is standard procedure for officer-involved shootings.
