A number of musicians are facing criticism after agreeing to take part in President-elect Trump’s inauguration celebrations. Among them, rapper Nelly is set to perform at the Liberty Ball and has spoken out in defense of his choice.
Nelly emphasized that his motivation is not monetary—rather, he sees it as an honor to perform for the president. In a discussion with fellow rapper Willie D, he stated, “I respect the office,” adding that it doesn’t matter who holds the position. He drew a parallel to military personnel who risk their lives for their country, explaining, “If they can put their life on the line for whoever is in office, I can damn sure perform for whoever is in office.”
Sources close to Nelly highlighted his family’s military background, noting that many of his relatives served to protect the rights Americans have, including voting. They clarified that while Nelly has avoided political campaigning, he views this performance as a significant honor.
In his conversation, Nelly also addressed his critics who label Trump as a white supremacist, urging them to provide evidence for such claims. He firmly stated, “The politics, for me, is over. He won! He’s the president. He’s the commander in chief of what I would like to say is the best country in the world.” Nelly affirmed, “If President Biden would’ve asked me to perform, I would’ve performed. If Vice President Kamala Harris would’ve won and asked me to perform, I would’ve performed.”
Nelly is not alone; country superstar Carrie Underwood, who will sing “America The Beautiful” at the inauguration, has also faced backlash but defended her performance. She explained her motivation came from a place of love for her country and a desire to be part of this historic moment.
Other artists scheduled to perform include Kid Rock, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Lee Greenwood, who has voiced support for his fellow performers, encouraging critics to respect their choices.
