Michigan State Bounces Back with Decisive Win Against USC
East Lansing, MI – After a tough loss to Nebraska, the Michigan State Spartans displayed their resilience with a commanding 80-51 victory over the USC Trojans. The Spartans, now with a 13-2 record (3-1 in the Big Ten), showcased a strong defensive performance and found offensive momentum to secure the win.
The game also marked a special milestone for Coach Tom Izzo, as he celebrated his 750th career win in front of a supportive crowd.
Forward Coen Carr led the Spartans with 18 points and six rebounds, overcoming a slow start to make a significant impact. Jeremy Fears Jr. contributed 15 points and seven assists, while Jaxon Kohler added 16 points and eight rebounds.
USC (12-3, 1-3) struggled against Michigan State’s defense. Ezra Ausar scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and Jerry Easter II added 12 points, but the team had trouble making shots, only hitting 32.7% of their attempts. Their three-point shooting was also cold, with only three successful shots out of 17 attempts.
Key Moments in the Game
After USC scored the first five points of the game, Michigan State quickly turned things around. Divine Ugochukwu, back after missing the Nebraska game, helped spark a 13-2 run. Carr made a dunk, followed by Ugochukwu assisting Cooper for an alley-oop. Kur Teng scored, and Cooper hit two free throws, giving the Spartans a 10-0 run with Ugochukwu leading the offense.
Later, Fears contributed with mid-range jumpers, and freshman Cam Ward added a slam dunk. Kohler then hit two consecutive three-pointers, extending the lead to 27-11. The Spartans’ strong defense kept USC from scoring easily.
In the second half, Michigan State continued to dominate defensively, preventing USC from reaching 30 points until almost six minutes into the half. Fears remained aggressive, scoring 11 of his points by driving to the basket.
Carr’s Comeback
Carr’s performance was a key factor in the Spartans’ victory. After a slow start, he found his rhythm, making smart decisions on the court. Instead of forcing a three-point shot, he dribbled in for a successful jumper. In the second half, he continued to score, including a memorable play with Kohler and also made a three-pointer, which the crowd cheered.
Looking Ahead
Michigan State will continue their homestand with a game against Northwestern. Northwestern, with an 8-6 record but struggling in the Big Ten with three losses, will be looking to bounce back after a recent defeat against Minnesota.
