An English mother has received a 10-year prison sentence after being found guilty of manslaughter linked to the tragic deaths of her four young children in a house fire in 2021. Deveca Rose, aged 30, was convicted on Friday.
The incident occurred when Rose left her twin sons, Leyton and Logan, aged 3, and their older twin brothers, Kyson and Bryson, aged 4, alone at home while she went shopping. A fire broke out in the family’s house in Sutton, south London, while she was away. According to the Metropolitan Police, the children were found unconscious in an upstairs room and later died at a local hospital.
Neighbors tried to help; one even kicked in the front door in an attempt to rescue the children after noticing the house was on fire. Investigators believe the fire might have started from a candle or a burning cigarette in the living room and spread quickly due to clutter in the home.
The police reported that the children attempted to escape to an upstairs bedroom but were overcome by smoke. Postmortem examinations confirmed they died from inhaling smoke and fire fumes.
During the investigation, Rose claimed that a woman named “Jade,” whom she had met days before the incident, was supposed to care for the children. However, detectives could not find anyone matching that description.
While sentencing Rose, Judge Mark Lucraft emphasized that she left four very young boys alone and called the situation “deeply tragic.” He mentioned in court that Rose was not away for any essential reason at the time of the fire and remarked that she would have to live with the knowledge that she was responsible for their deaths.
The children’s father, Dalton Hoath, expressed his heartbreak during the trial, describing the day as “the worst day” of his life, and lamenting that his children’s lives had barely begun.
