On Monday, an Israeli drone strike in southern Lebanon resulted in the death of Mohammad Shaheen, who led Hamas’ military operations in the region, according to the Israeli military. This strike coincided with the impending deadline for Israel’s complete withdrawal from southern Lebanon, as outlined in a ceasefire agreement that concluded a lengthy conflict with Hezbollah.
The Israeli army accused Shaheen of orchestrating terror attacks from Lebanese soil, with funding and direction from Iran, aimed at targeting Israeli citizens. Hamas confirmed his death but referred to him as a military commander.
The strike ignited flames that engulfed a vehicle near a Lebanese army checkpoint, close to Sidon’s municipal sports stadium.
Initially, Israel was expected to withdraw its forces by late January, but under its influence, Lebanon extended the deadline to February 18. It is still uncertain if Israeli troops will meet this deadline.
Despite the ceasefire, Israel has reportedly continued its airstrikes in southern and eastern Lebanon. The Israeli government claims these strikes target military facilities believed to house missiles and other combat gear. Both Israel and Lebanon have since accused each other of breaching the ceasefire agreement.
