A young man from Michigan has been apprehended after a shocking incident in Pennsylvania, where he allegedly drove more than 700 miles to ignite a fire at the home of a man who had been communicating with his ex-girlfriend online. The police have identified the suspect as 21-year-old Harrison Jones, from Rockford, Michigan.
Jones was accused of setting ablaze a residence that housed six individuals. Fortunately, all members of the family managed to escape, though they were sent to the hospital due to smoke inhalation. Tragically, the family’s two dogs, named Trey and Jett, perished in the fire, unable to escape the chaos.
Officials report that the family’s mother played a crucial role in their survival. She heard strange noises, which prompted her to investigate. Upon discovering the fire, she swiftly evacuated her family, with some members even having to leap from second-story windows to reach safety. Bensalem Public Safety Director William McVey praised the mother’s decisive actions, stating, “It’s a miracle they all survived. We credit the mother of that house for taking the actions she did to protect her family.”
Investigators from Bensalem Fire Rescue and local police soon began examining the fire’s origins and swiftly determined that it seemed to have been deliberately set. They managed to gather a grainy image from a neighbor’s security camera, which showed a black sedan arriving at the house early in the morning. In the footage, a figure can be seen getting out of the vehicle and lingering at the rear of the home for over ten minutes before speeding away as an explosion engulfed the structure in flames.
Two days post-incident, investigators connected the vehicle to Jones, leading to the issuance of an arrest warrant and his subsequent capture. It was noted that Jones had apparent burns on his arm when apprehended, raising further questions about his involvement.
Reports indicate that Jones had previously been in a relationship with a woman from Michigan who had begun corresponding with a male resident of the Bensalem household earlier this year. The specific motives behind his drastic actions remain under investigation. Court documents reveal that although he had planned to accompany his ex-girlfriend to meet this male acquaintance, he instead made the long drive alone with “murderous intentions.”
“He drove over 730 miles, 11 hours, to do what he did and then drove directly back home,” McVey highlighted during a recent press conference. He faces serious charges including six counts of attempted homicide and arson, and is currently awaiting extradition back to Pennsylvania to face justice.
The family affected by this tragedy, known as the Zalenskis, has been left in ruins. A GoFundMe page set up by a family member details the hardships they have endured, including the loss of their beloved pets and their home. The family consists of Andrew and Stacy Zalenski, their two children, and Stacy’s parents.
In the heart-wrenching statement on the crowdfunding platform, it says, “Our family members are currently going through a horrendous time in their lives. If you have animals, you know they are a part of your family, and they meant everything to this family.”
The post recounts how Stacy bravely risked her life to save her dogs, only to be forced to jump to safety herself due to smoke. The family’s plight is even more profound considering Stacy’s recent battle with cancer.
Bucks County District Attorney Jennifer Schorn remarked, “This is a family’s worst nightmare to be asleep in their home, not knowing that a stranger broke into their home and attempted to take their lives by setting their home on fire.” She emphasizes the inconceivable loss suffered by this family and affirms that Jones will face the full extent of the law for his actions.
In solidarity with the grieving family, a fundraiser is also underway that honors the memory of the beloved dogs who lost their lives in the fire. A local animal welfare society plans to commemorate them with a plaque dedicated to their heroism, ensuring that their memory lives on amidst this tragic event.
