Poza Rica, Mexico – Following days of severe rainfall, the number of people who have died in Mexico has sadly reached 44. The heavy rains caused floods and land movement, especially in states like Veracruz, Hidalgo and Puebla.
President Claudia Sheinbaum is working with governors of these affected states to make sure help gets to those who need it most.
The National Coordination of Civil Protection says that most deaths occurred in Veracruz and Hidalgo. Sadly, more deaths could be reported as rescue teams keep searching through areas hit hard by the weather.
In Veracruz and Puebla, the army, police, and firefighters are rescuing people and providing temporary shelters with food and medical care. However, thousands are still without water and electricity.
Sheinbaum visited Veracruz and assured people that help is on the way, especially to those in isolated communities.
Reports say that some parts of Veracruz received a lot of rain over a few days. In Poza Rica, some areas were covered by many feet of water when the Cazones River overflowed.
Officials are saying that Tropical Storms Priscilla and Raymond, which were once hurricanes, are to blame for the heavy rains.
