The New England Patriots secured a playoff spot with a 28-24 victory over the Baltimore Ravens in a game that saw a significant comeback and a key injury. The Patriots now hold a 12-3 record after the win.
The Ravens, on the other hand, are facing a tougher road to the playoffs. With a 7-8 record, their chances depend on winning their remaining games and hoping for a series of losses by the Pittsburgh Steelers, including their head-to-head matchup in the final week.
A major turning point in the game was an injury to Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson. In the second quarter, Jackson appeared to injure his back during a running play. He left the game and was replaced by Tyler Huntley. Jackson was later ruled out for the remainder of the game, leaving Huntley to lead the Ravens’ offense.
Despite Jackson’s absence, the Ravens managed to build a lead. Running back Derrick Henry scored his second touchdown early in the fourth quarter, extending their lead to 24-13.
However, the Patriots mounted a comeback led by quarterback Drake Maye. Maye orchestrated a 73-yard drive, capped off by a 37-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Williams. The Patriots successfully converted a two-point attempt, narrowing the Ravens’ lead to three points.
The Patriots’ defense then stepped up, forcing the Ravens to punt. Maye and the offense took over, driving 89 yards down the field. Rhamondre Stevenson, who took on a larger role due to an injury to TreVeyon Henderson, broke free for a 21-yard touchdown run, giving the Patriots a 28-24 lead.
With just under two minutes remaining, the Ravens attempted to respond, but Zay Flowers fumbled after a catch, and the Patriots recovered the ball.
Maye then sealed the victory with a 16-yard run on a read option, sliding down before the end zone to allow the Patriots to run out the clock.
In terms of individual performances, Jackson completed 7 of 10 passes for 101 yards before his injury. Huntley completed 9 of 10 passes for 65 yards in relief. Henry rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns.
For the Patriots, Maye completed 31 of 44 passes for 380 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception. Stefon Diggs led all receivers with 138 yards on nine catches.
This win secures a playoff berth for the Patriots, while the Ravens face an uphill battle to make the playoffs.
