Andrew Lester, the 86-year-old man involved in the shooting of 16-year-old Ralph Yarl after a mistaken doorbell ring, accepted a plea deal on February 14. This agreement allows him to plead guilty to second-degree assault, which will spare him from a trial set for February 18. Instead, he may face one to seven years in prison or a fine of up to $10,000.
In April 2023, Ralph Yarl had gone to pick up his younger siblings from a friend’s house when he accidentally rang Lester’s doorbell. Allegedly, Lester shot Yarl in the head through a storm door. Reports indicate that after Yarl fell to the ground, he was shot again. Despite his injuries, Yarl managed to get assistance from a neighbor.
Yarl, a talented clarinet player and a National Merit Commended student, suffered a brain injury from the shooting. His recovery has been described as impressive by those close to him.
Following the plea deal, Clay County Prosecuting Attorney Zachary Thompson expressed that this decision holds Lester accountable while providing closure for Yarl and satisfying the legal process.
Lester’s attorney, Steve Salmon, had claimed self-defense was a factor, mentioning Lester’s heart and memory problems. However, a judge found him fit for trial in November 2024 after a mental evaluation.
Yarl’s mother, Cleo Nagbe, stated that while this plea is a step towards accountability, it is essential that the consequences reflect the seriousness of Lester’s actions, emphasizing the harm caused to her son.
