The man charged with the tragic stabbing of three young girls at a Taylor Swift-themed dance event has admitted to his crimes.
On January 20, 2025, 18-year-old Axel Rudakubana acknowledged that he killed 7-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe, 9-year-old Alice da Silva Aguiar, and 6-year-old Bebe King during an incident on July 29, 2024. This development occurred at his trial in Liverpool Crown Court, as reported by various UK news outlets.
Rudakubana, who lives in Banks, Lancashire, pleaded guilty to three counts of murder and 10 counts of attempted murder. Additionally, he faced two charges related to terrorism for possessing the toxic substance ricin and an Al Qaeda training manual.
The stabbings happened at The Hart Space community center in Southport during a summer dance class. King and Stancombe died at the scene, while da Silva Aguiar later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. Furthermore, five children and two adults required hospital treatment due to the attack.
At the time of the attack, Rudakubana was 17 years old. During the trial, he wore a surgical mask and was reluctant to confirm his identity when questioned by the judge. His lawyer indicated that Rudakubana pled guilty in a barely audible voice.
Rudakubana had initially pleaded not guilty to the charges the previous month and is expected to receive his sentencing on January 23, 2025. The presiding judge stated that it is likely he will face a life sentence.
Following Rudakubana’s guilty plea, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor Ursula Doyle described the attack as horrific, stating it left a lasting impact on the community. She noted that what should have been a joyful occasion for children turned into a scene of unimaginable violence.
Doyle expressed gratitude for the plea, which spared the families the pain of a lengthy trial. She extended her thoughts to the families affected, particularly remembering the young girls whose lives were cut short.
In the aftermath of the stabbings, Taylor Swift expressed her shock and sorrow over the incident, sharing her sympathies for the victims’ families on social media. She reflected on the loss of innocence and the trauma experienced by all who were present during the attack.
