A tragic incident occurred early Wednesday in Prayagraj, India, where a stampede during the Maha Kumbh festival left several individuals feared dead and many more injured. Tens of thousands of Hindu devotees had gathered for a holy dip in the rivers when chaos ensued, according to local media reports.
As families desperately searched for missing relatives outside a temporary hospital, rescuers worked to assist the injured while police struggled to control the crowds. Personal belongings, including clothes and backpacks, littered the area affected by the stampede. Initial reports suggest that around ten people may have lost their lives, but the exact number of injuries remains unclear.
The stampede happened on a significant day of the six-week festival, which is recognized as the world’s largest religious gathering, drawing a staggering 100 million participants to purify themselves in the sacred waters at the meeting point of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythological Saraswati rivers. The festival features thousands of Hindu ascetics who come in large groups to partake in this ancient ritual.
Despite the earlier chaos, millions of devotees continued to flock to the site, as police used loudspeakers to advise them to stay away from the dangerous area. Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, urged attendees to avoid the crowded confluence and consider bathing at safer nearby locations. He also took to social media to request the public not to heed any rumors circulating about the event.
The Maha Kumbh festival, which occurs every 12 years, began on January 13 and is expected to attract over 400 million people throughout its duration. To accommodate this influx, authorities have constructed a massive tent city along the river, complete with thousands of kitchens and restrooms, as well as essential infrastructure like roads, electricity, and hospitals.
In response to safety concerns, approximately 50,000 security personnel are deployed to ensure order and manage the overwhelming crowds. Additionally, over 2,500 surveillance cameras, some equipped with artificial intelligence, have been installed to monitor crowd movements and density, allowing for swift action to prevent tragedies.
This is not the first time such an unfortunate event has occurred at this festival. In 2013, a stampede at a train station in Prayagraj resulted in the loss of at least 40 lives. Stampedes during religious festivals in India are sadly not uncommon due to the large crowds, limited infrastructure, and insufficient safety measures, as seen in a recent incident in Hathras where many lives were lost.
While these events highlight the need for improved safety measures at religious gatherings, the spirit of the Maha Kumbh festival continues to resonate deeply within the hearts of millions of Hindus who cherish their faith and traditions.
